Why We Should NOT Abolish Grading
A world where the school system has no common success needs is like having a government with no laws. If grading were to be abolished this would be the greatest blunder our superiors of the school system will ever make. Stated by Paul Goodman, the author of A Proposal to Abolish Grading, he stands for abolishing grading. He uttered, "What a grim waste of young life and teacherly effort." I strongly disagree with this declaration. Having no system of grading, would basically express we have no structure in our education system. Having a grading system is like having a progress chart and a natural standard. For instance, if I receive a C on a homework assignment I know I will have to try harder and will want to improve that grade. I know there are other grades higher than what I have; I want the highest grade so I will feel, "I have mastered this lesson."
The grade of an A, B, C, D, could have standards as high as the teacher want them to be. Just because you may have to stay in that span of letters, doesn't mean they can’t stand for what you want them to stand for. The students can always go the extra mile of what is required of them. The decision is up to that student to make the grade what it is really worth not to anyone, but themself
Paul Goodman- "But I submit that this setup itself makes it impossible for the student to become a master, to have grown up, and to commence his own." As I declared in the past, the decision is up to that student to go the extra mile. Who says that the grading scale holds students back? It is only true if the student themselves has that philosophy.
